It was the first time in program history that Tennessee had been ranked No. 1 in the playoff rankings (which have been around since 2014).
On Halloween night, the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2023 season will be released.
And while the Vols won't be ranked among the top teams in the nation, they'll still likely be included in the top 25.
247Sports took a shot at predicting what they think the top 25 will look like on Tuesday night and they think the Vols will land at No. 19 in the initial rankings.
From 247Sports: The loss to Florida now looks pretty wretched and Tennessee had a double-digit lead on Alabama away from Neyland Stadium earlier this month before squandering a prime opportunity. After Saturday's win at Kentucky, though, the Vols' season-long goal of winning the SEC East is still there for the taking if Tennessee can beat Missouri and Georgia next month. The Bulldogs would need to lose twice for the perfect scenario to unfold for the Vols and they do play Missouri this weekend.
Tennessee would need to win out and hope for one of the most chaotic Novembers ever to even have a chance of sniffing the top four in December.
A year from now, however, it will be a different story. The playoff will expand to 12 teams next season. And a team that's ranked around No. 19 in the initial rankings will still stand a great chance of reaching the top 12 by the end of the season.
Moving forward, it feels like the Vols are going to be in the playoff conversation each season with Josh Heupel leading the program.
