The Tennessee Vols’ coaching staff made a concerted effort over the offseason to improve the offense.
After getting blasted by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round of the College Football Playoff last December, Tennessee’s coaches knew the offense needed to evolve for the Vols to get to where they want to go.
“Last season, we left the playoffs and as an offensive staff, man, we felt like we got to evolve,” said Vols wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope earlier this month. “We got to go seek and learn and get some different things. We had to take accountability and look in the mirror as coaches. And I think we did that with the things that we’re showing on offense. It’s completely foreign to what Tennessee’s offenses has looked like here so far.”
Tennessee’s offense has included some new looks in 2025. The Vols have used some condensed formations that we haven’t seen before from a Josh Heupel-coached team. Tennessee is also using some plays that are straight out of an NFL playbook.
Vols running back DeSean Bishop says Tennessee hasn’t “emptied the clip” yet on offense
Tennessee’s offense is averaging 53.5 points per game through the first four weeks of the season. That includes a 41 point performance in an overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 3.
As impressive as Tennessee’s offense has been early this season, it sounds like there’s still more left in the tank for the Vols to tap into.
Vols redshirt sophomore running back DeSean Bishop told reporters on Monday that Tennessee hasn’t “emptied the clip” offensively.
“We have shown a lot, but we haven’t empty the clip yet, honestly, [with] what we can do,” said Bishop. “The offense looks a little different — we’re in tight, we’re in wide (formations). We’re in the pistol now. So, I mean, we’re throwing a lot of stuff at teams this year. And it’s been a blessing to be a part of this.
“The offense has kind of shaped its way into more of a — it’s a crazy offense, honestly…it’s making a lot of our jobs kind of easier in a way. Because we got the guys that can make the plays and we’re throwing a lot at defenses. It’s fun to be a part of.”
Tennessee’s offense should continue to improve this season as quarterback Joey Aguilar gets more comfortable each week, and as the offensive line continues to build chemistry with each other (UT’s offensive line has been terrific so far this season). This Vols team has a chance to accomplish some special things this season if everyone stays healthy.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney did the Tennessee Vols a couple of huge favors
Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney did the Tennessee Vols a couple of big favors over the weekend. Well, it was really Swinney’s team underperforming in a home game against Syracuse that will ultimately help the Vols. Clemson dropped its third game of the season on Saturday, losing to Syracuse 34-21 in front of 80,255 […]
