The Tennessee Vols baseball team had a solid first weekend of action, winning two of three games in the Shriners Children's College Showdown in Arlington, TX.

Tennessee beat Texas Tech in the opener on Friday night before losing to Oklahoma in extra innings on Saturday. The Vols closed out the weekend on Sunday night with a convincing 11-5 win against Baylor.

D1 Baseball released their updated top 25 rankings on Monday morning and they have the Vols holding steady at No. 9.

Even with the loss to Oklahoma, the weekend was a smashing success for the Vols. The objective, obviously, is always to win. But this opening weekend, for the second year in a row, was more about playing in a regional-like atmosphere, providing the Vols with valuable experience they'll be able to lean on as they get into conference play and, eventually, tournament play.

“I think it taught you what a regional game is going to look like if you haven’t played college baseball before," said Vitello after the loss to the Sooners on Saturday. "That’s a regional game, or a super regional game or a game in Hoover. If you’re fortunate enough to move on from there, that’s what those games look like. The ones that when you go back to the hotel, it either really, really hurts — which I hope it does for our guys tonight — and also if you get it done, it feels good….we’re trying to get to know our guys a little bit, and they’re trying to get to know what this is all about. They learned a lot from being in this deal.”

Tennessee hosts UNC-Asheville on Tuesday and East Tennessee State on Wednesday before welcoming Albany to Knoxville for a weekend series.
