The Tennessee Vols are reportedly staying in the state for their bowl game.

On3’s Brett McMurphy reported on Sunday afternoon that Tennessee will face Illinois in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30.

The Vols last played in the Music City Bowl in 2021, a game they lost to Purdue after officials ruled that running back Jaylen Wright’s forward progress had stopped, negating what would have been a touchdown.

The Tennessee Vols should be very happy with their bowl game destination

Heading to Nashville for a bowl game may not seem like the most exciting end to a season for the Vols, but it’s a big positive for Tennessee, mainly because it means the program won’t be playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Jan. 2.

That’s important because the NCAA transfer portal opens on Jan. 2.

“I think what’s interesting with the coaches and programs is they’re not interested in the game in Charlotte because it’s January 2 at 8:00 PM,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs last week on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “The portal opens that day. You don’t want to lose two days of portal work.”

Playing in Nashville on Dec. 30 will give the Vols a couple of days after the bowl game to focus on the transfer portal. And ultimately, that’s far more important than the bowl game destination.
