Former Tennessee Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert is one of the New York Mets' top prospects, but he hasn't seen much action in 2024 due to injury.
Gilbert, who was acquired by the Mets last summer in exchange for future Hall of Fame RHP Justin Verlander, started the 2024 season at Triple-A Syracuse after finishing the 2023 season in Double-A Binghamton.
The former Vol played in seven games for Syracuse, hitting a home run in late March, before a hamstring injury sidelined him.
In his first seven games for Syracuse before the injury, Gilbert was slashing .240/.321/.360 with one home run.
On Tuesday, The Athletic's Will Sammon reported that the Mets are expecting Gilbert to return to Syracuse's lineup in the second half of June.
The injury was an unfortunate setback for Gilbert, who will turn 24 in September. Considering the Mets' woes early this season, the former Vol could've been an early call-up candidate for New York. But because of the time missed with the hamstring injury, Gilbert likely won't have a legit shot to reach the big leagues until late in the 2024 season.
