NASHVILLE — Rookie Will Levis was named as the Tennessee Titans (3-5) starting quarterback on Tuesday. Mike Vrabel told reporters that he announced the decision to the team in a meeting earlier in the morning.
After 61 games across the last five seasons under center, veteran Ryan Tannehill heads to the bench.
"Going forward Will is going to be our quarterback," Vrabel said. "We're going to go with Will, we think that's the best opportunity for our football team right now, and see where he's at."
Levis has performed admirably in relief of Tannehill, but now the task becomes proving himself to the organization and fans as their future.
Tennessee beat the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8, then fell on the road to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. The Titans play two more road games in Weeks 10 and 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-5) and Jacksonville Jaguars (6-2). Tennessee has yet to win a game away from Nissan Stadium this season.
Levis has completed 60.3% of his passes in the two contests, throwing for 500 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
All four scores came in the win against the Falcons, while Tennessee was held to a total of 16 points in Pittsburgh. The former second-round pick did provided an undeniable spark to a football team that had swung from listless to lifeless and back again through the first six weeks of the season. Tannehill had been the team's starter heading into 2023, but suffered a high ankle sprain in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in London.
The Titans were 2-4 with the veteran under center, averaging a paltry 17.3 points per game.
Playing football in Tennessee right now is no easy task, and Levis' full-time promotion will not be enough to salvage an underperforming roster. Vrabel will likely have to return to benched left tackle Andre Dillard after less than two games of Nicholas Petit-Frere in the role. Paul Kuharsky reported on Monday that Petit-Frere will miss significant time due to shoulder surgery.
The rookie will be under duress.
Running backs Derrick Henry, Tyjae Spears and receiver DeAndre Hopkins are the only reliable assets on offense. He will be measured against two other ascending AFC South quarterbacks in Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Stroud. The Titans have yet to play Jacksonville or the Houston Texans so far this season.
Levis faces plenty of adversity stepping into his new role. A franchise with a highly uncertain future is depending on him to earn it.
No pressure, big guy.
Will Levis’ debut ends any Titans quarterback controvery
NASHVILLE — Will Levis led the Tennessee Titans (3-4) to a win over the Atlanta Falcons (4-4) by a score of 28-23 on Sunday. Decked out in Houston Oilers throwback uniforms, the rookie threw four touchdowns passes in his debut. It was the first time the Tennessee's offense had scored as many points since Week […]
