After a week of uncertainty, it appears one player has emerged as the top candidate to start at quarterback.

According to the Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan, Mac Jones is expected to start on Sunday for the New England Patriots in their Week 12 matchup against the New York Giants.

Jones and Bailey Zappe split reps in practice this week, but Jones performed better.

Zappe will now serve as the backup quarterback during the game. Will Grier, who has been the third-string quarterback was released by the team on Saturday. The Patriots also opted not to elevate QB/WR Malik Cunningham, so now it is only Jones and Zappe on the roster.

This situation was an odd one, with the players on the team not even knowing what is going to happen. And when asked about what his decision is going to be, Belichick has repeated the same sentence all week.

“I’ve told all the players the same thing: be ready to go,” Belichick has said throughout the week.

Mac Jones has served as the starter for the Patriots in all 10 games this season, but after he was benched in the Patriots loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany, it seemed that his time might be done.

The coaching staff had been quick to reaffirm that Jones will remain the starter earlier this season when he was benched in two prior games, but they didn't comment after the game in Germany.

This week, Jones has been competing with Bailey Zappe and Will Grier. While Malik Cunningham is still listed as a quarterback on the roster, it does not seem likely they he will get a chance.

While this decision has been made, it wouldn't be surprising to see Zappe rotating in for a few snaps throughout the day.

But with Bill Belichick leading the way, who knows what will happen.
