FOXBOROUGH, MA – Tom Brady and Julian Edelman became quite the duo when playing together. And they made sure to keep all of their fellow teammates entertained.
Brady will return to Gillette Stadium on Sunday for the New England Patriots season opener, with the organization set to honor him in a ceremony at halftime.
Many of his former teammates have reflected on what it will be like to have Brady back in the building, including Matthew Slater. He was asked about what his funniest memory of Brady is, and the longtime Patriot did not disappoint.
“I think for me, I always got a kick out of him and Julian (Edelman) getting into it," Slater said. "I mean it was like big brother, little brother. And obviously all of us were little brother, but I always enjoyed him razzing Julian and getting on him and then going back and forth.”
Slater was drafted by the Patriots in 2008, with Edelman joining the team as a rookie a year later. So the special teamer got a front row seat as he watched Edelman join the Patriots locker room and grow into a Super Bowl MVP.
“Initially Julian couldn’t even speak to Tom. Like don’t even look at him," Slater recalled. "Once Julian was JE11, then they started that banter and it was fantastic. We all loved it.”
Yet, for Slater this dynamic also demonstrated a very important lesson for the players about the game of football.
“And it’s just a reminder of the human element of this right? We’re all guys with personalities and interests and we hurt, we laugh, we cry, we celebrate," Slater said. "That’s probably the experience of being in the locker room and that’s what you remember most."
Brady led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships during his 20 years with the Patriots, so it's no secret why they would want to honor him after the legendary quarterback retired following the 2022 season.
“It’s going to be awesome," Slater said. "So glad that we’re honoring him and I know Mr. Kraft and the organization are going to honor him the right way, as they should. We’re the only organization in the NFL that can say we had the greatest player of all time play for us for 20 years. And we’re really thrilled about that and I know our fans look forward to celebrating him the right way. So it’ll be great to see him back in Foxborough.”
Along with the current members of the Patriots squad who played with Brady, Ty Law said on The Greg Hill Show (via WEEI's Mike Kadlick) that "a lot of the guys are coming in” for the game.
So Brady will be surrounded by the entire Patriots organization, many former teammates, and a passionate fanbase who is excited to celebrate.
A unique and special family reunion.
