The New England Patriots didn't take a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, but they didn't wait long to add one Saturday night.

The Patriots are signing Louisville QB Malik Cunningham as an undrafted free agent, NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reported Saturday. The Patriots currently have 86 players on their 90-man roster. They have space for four undrafted free agents but could cut players before signings become official.

Cunningham ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was a proficient passer and an incredibly productive rusher for the Cardinals.

The new Patriots QB rushed for 3,713 yards with 50 touchdowns in five seasons at Louisville. His most productive year was in 2021, when he carried the ball for 1,142 yards with 20 touchdowns. He also completed 62 percent of his passes that season for 2,941 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cunningham completed 136-of-218 passes for 1,568 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions in 2022 while adding 652 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

In his college career, Cunningham completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 9,660 yards with 70 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

Lumpkins is 6-foot-5, 264 pounds and ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash at his pro day last month. He caught 16 passes for 143 yards with four touchdowns in 2022.

Heilig is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and primarily worked as a special teamer in college. He played in 51 games over his four-year career and finished with 34 tackles.
