The New England Patriots made what seems like a necessary move a few days into the practice portion of their offseason workout program.

The Patriots have agreed to terms with veteran tight end Anthony Firkser, a source confirmed to A to Z Sports. ESPN’s Mike Reiss was first to report the move. Firkser, 28, spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons.

The 6-foot-2, 241-pound tight end went undrafted out of Harvard in 2017. He began his career with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs before finding a home with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2021.

He caught 106 passes for 1,107 yards with five touchdowns in four years with Tennessee. He added nine catches for 100 yards last season in Atlanta.

New England went into OTAs with just two veteran tight ends — Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki — on their roster. They were joined by Matt Sokol and Scott Washington — both practice squad players in 2022 — and undrafted rookie Johnny Lumpkin in the tight end room.

Firkser adds some insurance in case something happened to Henry or Gesicki if Sokol, Washington and Lumpkin weren’t ready to contribute.

Firkser is an experienced blocker and pass-catcher in the NFL. He played 11 games with one start in 2022 with the Falcons.

The Patriots will get back on the practice field May 31. They were docked two OTAs sessions for a meeting violation. Three-day mandatory minicamp begins June 12.
