The New England Patriots brought in one free agent running back to work out with the team on Wednesday, but it wasn't the one many thought.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Leonard Fournette worked out with the Patriots.

The veteran running back joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 – the same year that Tom Brady did – and went on to win a Super Bowl with the team that same year.

He remained with the Buccaneers for an additional two seasons, before being released in March.

Fournette began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being drafted in the first round, fourth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He spent three seasons with the Jaguars before signing with the Buccaneers in 2020. Across his six years in the league, Fournette has 1,132 carries for 4,478 yards and 34 touchdowns. He has had two 1,000+ yard seasons, including during his rookie season.

On the receiving side, he has 312 receptions for 2,219 yards and seven touchdowns.

In recent days the Patriots have been connected to Dalvin Cook, becoming the betting favorites to land the top free agent running back.

However, they might look towards Fournette instead to add additional depth. That and take some of the load of Rhamondre Stevenson.
