New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke to reporters on Monday and addressed the Matt Corral situation.
Prior to Sunday's game, Corral was placed on the reserve/left squad list which meant that he was removed from the Patriots 53-man roster, but cannot sign with another team. The Patriots can choose to activate him, but they would first have to clear a roster spot.
Yet, despite the reports that Corral left the Patriots without notice, Belichick confirmed that he and the team have been in contact with Corral.
“He’s in exempt status,” Belichick added. “I don’t have any comment on it. That’s a personal matter.”
Corral was present at practice last Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday but was missing on Friday. He then showed up on the injury report, being listed as a “not injury related” nonparticipant.
The Patriots then opted to sign Bailey Zappe to the 53-man roster, taking Corral's place.
Corral was drafted by the Panthers in third round of the 2022 NFL draft, but suffered an Lisfranc injury in the preseason in a game against the Patriots and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
He was then claimed off waivers after New England opted to waive quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham on cutdown day.
Corral's future status with the team remains uncertain, but based on Belichick's comments it appears he will remain on the list for the time being.
