The New England Patriots have brought back a familiar face to the practice squad.

The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed reports that the Patriots are signing quarterback Matt Corral to their practice squad.

He was released by New England on Monday and cleared waivers on Tuesday, allowing the Patriots to pick him up.

Corral was placed on the reserve/left squad list after he reportedly left the Patriots without notice. This meant that he was removed from the 53-man roster, but could not sign with another team. The Patriots could choose to activate him, but they would first have to clear a roster spot.

Prior to the season opener, Bill Belichick confirmed that the team had been in contact with the quarterback, but he remained on the list. It was Bailey Zappe who was moved up to the active roster and served as the back up to Mac Jones.

Corral was claimed off waivers after New England opted to waive quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham on cutdown day, with the former Panther joining Mac Jones on the active roster.

Corral takes the spot of quarterback Ian Book who was released from the practice squad on Monday as well.

This move makes it clear that New England plans to keep Bailey Zappe as the backup to Mac Jones, and will continue working with Corral.
