The New England Patriots are keeping their eye on one free agent as the start of the season looms closer.
The Patriots brought in Ezekiel Elliott for a workout late last month, and although he left without a contract, New England is still very interested.
Boston Sports Journal's Mike Giardi reports that the Patriots are one of "several teams that remain in the mix to sign" Elliott.
Giardi added that among the league sources he spoke with, one said that Elliott's game would fit well with the Patriots play style, while another said “there is no doubt he will sacrifice his body between the tackles or in blitz pickup.”
The Patriots have been looking to add a veteran running back to the mix, having interest in Dalvin Cook, while also working out free agents Leonard Fournette and former Rams running back Darrell Henderson in July as well.
However, Cook appears to have greater interest in joining the New York Jets, so New England started looking towards other free agents.
Elliott was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round (fourth overall pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft. Across his seven years with the Cowboys, Elliott has 8,262 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns across 103 games played. On the receiving side, has has recorded 305 receptions for 2,336 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Patriots have Rhamondre Stevenson as the top running back heading into the 2023 season, with Stevenson coming off a breakout season. However, adding Elliott to the mix could provide New England with some additional depth.
The Patriots search for a veteran running back has been going on for a while now, so will they sign Elliott soon or stick with the current running backs on the roster.
