The timeline for Jack Jones' injury has become a little more clear.

ESPN's Mike Reiss reports that the New England Patriots have placed Jack Jones on injured reserve due to his hamstring injury. This means he will be out for at least four games.

In a corresponding move, Reiss added that the Patriots have signed veteran running back Ty Montgomery to the 53-man roster, taking the spot left by Jones.

Jones was expected to be available for Sunday's game before suffering the injury in Wednesday's practice. This came after the charges against Jones were dropped, with the cornerback agreeing to one year of pre-trial probation along with 48 hours of community service.

He was arrested on June 16 at Boston Logan International Airport for trying to bring two loaded firearms on a plane. Jones was charged with two counts of possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

While the legal charges were dropped, there still remained a question of whether the league would discipline Jones, but his stint on injured reserve already sidelines him for at least four games.

With Jones out, this creates an opportunity for rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who could see increased time at the position. Jonathan Jones, Myles Bryant and Marcus Jones are also on the depth chart at cornerback.

As for Montgomery, he provides the Patriots with a third running back, with it just being Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott on the active roster before.

The Patriots will take the field on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. for their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium.
