FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots were back on the practice field Wednesday after an NFL-imposed long holiday weekend.
Wednesday’s organized team activities practice was the media’s first chance to watch the team in action since last week’s open session was canceled after the NFL docked two OTAs from New England for breaking offseason workout program rules.
Here’s what we saw on the practice field:
— The following players were absent from Wednesday’s session: kicker Nick Folk, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, long snapper Joe Cardona, cornerback Christian Gonzalez, guard Chasen Hines, cornerback Isaiah Bolden, guard Mike Onwenu, offensive tackle Trent Brown and defensive linemen Christian Barmore, Davon Godchaux and Lawrence Guy.
— Tight end Scotty Washington, safety Cody Davis, cornerback Marcus Jones and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were among the players limited in practice.
— Head coach Bill Belichick stressed before practice that these are voluntary sessions. Gonzalez did participate in rookie minicamp. He’s one of three draft picks, along with defensive lineman Keion White and linebacker Marte Mapu, who have not signed their rookie contracts. Jonathan Jones, Jack Jones, Myles Bryant and Joshuah Bledsoe saw more work with Gonzalez out and Marcus Jones limited.
— Mapu wore a red non-contact jersey. He dealt with a pectoral injury this offseason but was still involved on defense.
— Quarterbacks Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe and Trace McSorely also donned red non-contact jerseys. Undrafted free-agent QB Malik Cunningham did not. He showed off his versatility during the main portion of practice but did take quarterback reps in 11-on-11s after the session had mostly concluded. Cunningham was picked off by linebacker Chris Board.
“Just seeing him do the things he’s doing at receiver, it’s a thumps up from me,” wide receiver Tyquan Thornton said about Cunningham after practice.
— Thornton was heavily involved in team drills, catching five passes, including three from quarterback Mac Jones.
Jones showered Thornton with praise after practice.
“He’s fast, he’s a smart football player,” Jones said. “He’s got strong hands. I think it’s really just him continuing to grow that confidence. We’re all working for. He’s going to be a great player for a long time.”
It would be huge if Thornton could live up to his second-round pedigree with the Patriots this season since they did 1-for-1 swaps this offseason with offensive skill players with Smith-Schuster replacing Jakobi Meyers, tight end Mike Gesicki replacing Jonnu Smith and running back James Robinson replacing Damien Harris. New England also lost Nelson Agholor.
— Rookie kicker Chad Ryland can get a head start on winning the job with Folk a no-show. He did miss a field goal wide left.
— During the main portion of practice, Mac Jones clearly looked like the starter. In full-speed drills, he was 3-of-3 in 7-on-7s and 10-of-10 in 11-on-11s. Bailey Zappe was 1-of-2 in 7-on-7s and 6-of-7 with an interception in 11-on-11s. Trace McSorely was 1-of-2 in 7-on-7s and 4-of-6 with an interception in full-team drills.
— Safeties Jalen Mills and Brad Hawkins had interceptions.
— The usual suspects shared the field with Mac Jones with Smith-Schuster out, including Thornton, wide receivers DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne and tight end Hunter Henry. Gesicki also saw a lot of action. It will be interesting to see who comes off with Smith-Schuster is back.
— With offensive tackle Trent Brown out, Riley Reiff spent time on both sides of the line, while Calvin Anderson stuck on the left side. Practice-squad mainstay Bill Murray saw extensive action with Onwenu still recovering from an offseason surgery. As Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported earlier in the offseason, rookie fourth-round pick Sidy Sow lined up at offensive tackle. He spent most of his college career at guard. Fellow rookie fourth-round pick Jake Andrews moved around the line in his college positions of guard and center.
— The Patriots are deep at safety with Mills, Bledsoe, Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips and Jabrill Peppers all rotating into the defense with Devin McCourty enjoying retirement.
— Joe Judge, who was a quarterbacks coach last season, worked mostly on special teams Wednesday.
