The New England Patriots received some bad news on Thursday.
Marcus Jones will be sidelined for a while after sustaining an injury on Sunday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Jones suffered a torn labrum and is being placed on injured reserve.
Jones went down after trying to tackle Jaylen Waddle in the Patriots loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night. The cornerback remained on the ground in clear pain following the play, and trainers rushed over to assist him. He was eventually helped up and was able to walked over to the sidelines with assistance.
As he headed to the blue medical tent, Bill Belichick came over to check on him. He remained in the tent, but later emerged and headed to the locker room. While he was originally marked as questionable to return with a shoulder injury, Jones was downgraded to out after halftime.
Jones' move made space for one more player on the active roster, and New England wasted no time, signing former Cowboys quarterback Will Grier.
This was somewhat expected after Jones' has been missing from practice this week.
Jones was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He made an impact his rookies season, returning a game-winning punt return against the New York Jets in Week 1, along with an offensive touchdown in Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills and a defensive touchdown (pick-six) against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16.
This is a huge hit to the Patriots secondary, with Jack Jones being placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the season. Jonathan Jones is also dealing with an ankle injury, having missed the game on Sunday.
In light of these injuries, the Patriots have signed two cornerbacks to the practice squad, bringing in Azizi Hearn and Breon Borders. They were both spotted at practice on Thursday.
