The New England Patriots have waived wide receiver Ed Lee on Wednesday, multiple sources report. WPRI's Sam Knox first announced.

Lee was signed by the Patriots on June 5, after he was invited to their rookie minicamp along with their local pro day.

However, on Tuesday during training camp he appeared to suffer an injury and spent Wednesday's session on the conditioning fields.

A Patriots fan since he was eight, Lee didn't travel far after college. In his final season at the University of Rhode Island, Lee had 56 receptions for 908 yards and five touchdowns. He also earned Second Team All-CAA Football honors along with being named Third Team as a punt returner that same season.

And he is no stranger to the NFL, having learned from his father who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1981, and played as a receiver until 1984.

An undrafted free agent, Lee was a long shot to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but had some shining moments during the spring and summer. His release comes a day after New England signed WR Thyrick Pitts off waivers from the Chicago Bears, with WR Jalen Hurd retiring.

The Patriots now have one open roster spot.
