The New England Patriots have added another quarterback to the mix.

The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed reports that the Patriots are signing former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book to their practice squad.

On Monday, NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported that New England was bringing in Book for a workout on Tuesday. And it appears he made a strong impression, with the Patriots signing him that same morning.

Book worked out with the 49ers earlier this week after spending the offseason with the Eagles. He was claimed by Philadelphia on Aug. 31 2022, but was waived just under a year later.

The quarterback's NFL career began in 2021 when he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round. He started in one game that season, going 12-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions. However, he was then waived by the team in Aug. 2022.

The Patriots were in need of another quarterback on the roster after they placed Matt Corral on the reserve/left squad list. This meant that he was removed from the Patriots 53-man roster, but cannot sign with another team. The Patriots can choose to activate him, but they would first have to clear a roster spot.

Last week Belichick was asked about the situation, confirming that the team was in contact with Corral.

“He’s in exempt status,” Belichick said. “I don’t have any comment on it. That’s a personal matter.”

Book will join the team ahead of their Sunday Night matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Bailey Zappe, who was signed to the 53-man roster last week is expected to serve as the backup to Mac Jones for the time being.
