Patriots signing looks like starter based on contract details
The Patriots have added two offensive tackles in free agency.
Offensive tackle Riley Reiff clearly impressed the New England Patriots in his one season with the Chicago Bears coming off of an ankle injury.
The Patriots signed Reiff to a one-year contract worth $5 million with a $2.7 million signing bonus and $4.15 million in total guarantees.
His $1.45 million base salary is fully guaranteed, and the deal includes $750,000 total in per-game roster bonuses. It also includes up to $4 million in playing time incentives. Maximum, Reiff can earn $9 million on his new deal with the Patriots. Cutting Reiff, 34, would incur $4.15 million in dead cap.
So, Reiff is almost certainly going to be a Patriot in 2023. He spent most of his career at left tackle before a late-career switch to right tackle. The Patriots have also signed ex-Broncos swing tackle Calvin Anderson this offseason and re-signed Conor McDermott. Trent Brown is projected to start at one tackle spot, and 2022 seventh-round pick Andrew Stueber is also on the roster.
As of now, it appears Brown and Reiff will be the Patriots’ starting tackles. On Wednesday, $3 million of Brown’s $4 million base salary became fully guaranteed.
The Patriots should still look to draft an offensive tackle this offseason since Brown and Reiff are both in their 30s.
