FOXBORO, Mass. — Despite a small hiccup in the middle of practice, it was a pretty solid day for the defense. And among all the defenders, it was the rookies who really stood out.
Christian Gonzalez and Marte Mapu both had interceptions during the team drills, with Gonzalez intercepting Mac Jones and Mapu intercepting Trace McSorley.
The two have been solid during training camp, with Gonzalez taking reps with the 1s.
However, at one point during practice the entire defensive group had to do a lap due to a substitution error. Following their lap, Belichick called them over for a small huddle before resuming drills.
Here’s what else I saw from Sunday's training camp session:
– Defensive Highlights
PBUs: Joshuah Bledsoe, Myles Bryant, Jabrill Peppers, Jack Jones, and Rodney Randle
INT: Gonzalez, Mapu, Joshuah Bledsoe, Shaun Wade
– And if you count it, the paddles also had two pass breakups during the 7-on-7 period.
– Matthew Judon returned to team drills after spending much of training camp on the conditioning fields and had an immediate impact, recording three sacks. However, when asked if he will remain with the team or return to the conditioning fields, Judon's answer was both simple and funny: “I’m trying to keep this summer body going.”
– PLAY OF THE DAY: DeVante Parker had a 35 yards catch from Mac Jones over Jack Jones during a two-minute drill. It was a great throw and a great catch.
– A close second: Mike Gesicki hauled in a one handed pass along the sideline from Mac Jones.
– Tyquan Thornton was back in the mix on Sunday, seeing a little bit more action in team drills. The second year receiver has had a very quiet camp.
– Demario Douglas started the day running drills with Mac Jones, while Tyquan Thornton was with Bailey Zappe and Trace McSorley.
– Patriots were without offensive linemen David Andrews, Trent Brown, Cole Strange, Mike Ownenu, and Calvin Anderson, so it was Conor McDermott, Atonio Mafi, James Ferentz, Kody Russey, and Riley Reiff making up the first line.
