The New Orleans Saints are making a distinct depth chart change ahead of their Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans.
Taysom Hill is making the technical swap from tight end back to quarterback as the team's QB3 on the depth chart.
This move seemingly comes as a result of an NFL rule change from this offseason. Jameis Winston is currently dealing with an injury, but he remains on the 53-man roster. If he were to miss the game on Sunday, the Saints would still have three QBs available as they could add Jake Haener to the active roster as an 'emergency QB' that wouldn't need to count against their roster number on game day.
New Orleans is checking all of their boxes to make sure they have a plan in case of disaster for Derek Carr. They have learned all too well about QB injuries in recent seasons.
As the technical 'QB2' on game day in this scenario, Hill would be able to line up at the positions – as he always does. Only the 'QB3' would be limited to a strictly under center role for the offense.
The biggest upside for the Saints is that it allows them to dress an extra player.
Winston or Haener would count as an extra man as the team's fourth quarterback under the new emergency quarterback rule. They would have more flexibility and depth, albeit with limits.
