The New York Jets have their 53-man roster set as we pass the deadline for Roster Cutdown Day. More moves could eventually happen as players become available, but for now the Jets have the 53 guys they plan to go into the season with.

Some things to keep in mind as we look at the roster. Brandin Echols is suspended for the first game of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. He does not count towards the 53-man roster until after week one when the Jets will be forced to make another roster move.

Rookie offensive tackle Carter Warren will likely go on IR following the initial 53-man roster which will open another slot while keep Warren on the team.

Kenny Yeboah made the team as the fourth tight end but will also likely wind up on IR creating another roster spot.

The Jets are likely playing with the roster by releasing punter Thomas Morstead and FB Nick Bawden and will likely bring them back in a few days after Warren and Yeboah are moved to IR.

Below are the 53 players the Jets currently have on their roster.

Jets 2023 Roster

Quarterback (2):

IN: Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson

OUT: Tim Boyle

Boyle simply didn’t perform well enough this preseason to push Zack Wilson for the number two spot. Boyle likely returns to the practice squad.

Running Back (5):

IN: Breece Hall, Dalvin Cook, Izzy Abanikanda, Michael Carter

OUT: Zonovan “Bam” Knight, Travis Dye, Nick Bawden

Knight and Michael Carter were neck and neck for the final roster spot once the Jets brought in Dalvin Cook, but a few poor showings by Knight cemented his fate.

As I wrote earlier, Bawden will likely be back once the Jets make subsequent roster moves to create space.

Wide Receiver (7):

IN: Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Mecole Hardman, Jason Brownlee, Xavier Gipson, Irv Charles

OUT: Jerome Kapp, Alex Erickson, Malik Taylor

The Jets keeping seven wide receivers at this point, including three undrafted rookie free agents: Jason Brownlee, Xavier Gipson, and Irv Charles.

While Rodgers has been more than accommodating, and the Jets couldn’t have foreseen Corey Davis’ sudden retirement, I can’t imagine he is too happy with almost half of his receiving core being UDFAs.

Tight End (4):

IN: Tyler Conklin, CJ Uzomah, Jeremy Ruckert, Kenny Yeboah*

OUT: Zack Kuntz, E.J. Jenkins

Kuntz is very athletic still very raw at the tight end position. He will likely make the practice squad as the Jets try to develop his skills.

Offensive Line (10):

IN: Duane Brown, Mekhi Becton, Max Mitchell, Billy Turner, Laken Tomlinson, AVT, Wes Schweitzer, Joe Tippmann, Connor McGovern, Carter Warren*

OUT: Greg Senat, Yodny Cajuste, Adam Pankey, Grant Hermanns, Trystan Colon, Brent Laing

Defensive End (6):

IN: Jermaine Johnson, JFM, Carl Lawson, Bryce Huff, Will McDonald, Micheal Clemons

What can you say about this group except “lookout”?

Defensive Tackle (4):

IN: Quinnen Williams, Al Woods, Quinton Jefferson, Solomon Thomas

OUT: Tanzel Smart, Jalyn Holmes, Bruce Hecton

(See defensive end analysis)

Linebacker (5):

IN: CJ Mosley, Quincy Williams, Jamien Sherwood, Chazz Surratt, Zaire Barnes

OUT: Sam Eguavoen, Claudin Cherelus, Pita Taumoepen, Nick Vigil

The Jets keep both Surratt and Barnes in a surprise move. Saleh has been vocal about his love for Surratt.

Cornerback (5):

IN: Sauce Gardner, DJ Reed, Michael Carter II, Bryce Hall, Justin Hardee, Brandin Echols*

OUT: Dan Cruikshank, Derrick Langford, Nehemiah Shelton

A move still might happen after week one with Bryce Hall being let go, unless the Jets decide to keep five true corners. Justin Hardee is really only a special teams player.

* Echols is on the suspended list

Safety (4):

IN: Jordan Whitehead, Tony Adams, Ashtyn Davis, Adrian Amos

OUT: Trey Dean, Marquis Waters, Craig James, Jarrick Bernard-Converse**

Trey Dean lost his spot thanks to the great play from Tony Adams who turned a lot of heads this off season.

**Bernard-Converse is on the PUP list.

Specials (2):

IN: Greg Zuerlein, Thomas Hennessy

OUT: Thomas Morstead

As I said above, Morstead is likely just playing with the roster as vested veteran and will be brought back within a few days.

Some moves are still left to be made for the final Jets roster, but for now, these are the 53 they will be going to battle with in week one against the Buffalo Bills.

Aaron Rodgers makes his successful debut for the Jets

Jets fans you waited. You waited all preseason. You waited all offseason. You waited for years. You waited for decades. Aaron Rodgers took the field for the Jets and temporarily ended your quarterback drought. And though it might only be a meaningless preseason game, it did matter.
