C.J. Mosley is the defensive quarterback on the Jets and has lead the team in tackles the last three years. He is the defensive signal caller and a mentor on the team.

And now he has given the Jets one more thing they desperately needed – cap space.

According to reports, the Jets and C.J. Mosley have agreed to a two-year, $17.25 million contract that creates more salary cap space for the team and keeps Mosley in New York for an extra year.

Mosley was due to make a non-guaranteed $17 million in base pay in 2023 with a bloated cap charge of $21.5 million, easily the highest on the team. The two sides extended the contract by a year and included $13.25 million in guarantees, including $9 million fully guaranteed this season.

The new contract will provide at least eight million in cap savings, which should help the Jets' free agency efforts as the look to continue to improve along the offensive side of the ball.

Mosley had a rough start to his New York career playing in just one game in his first two seasons after a groin injury sidelined him and then he took the Covid opt-out year in 2020. Since then, he has been worth every penny of his then-record breaking five-year $85 million contract.

More Work To Do

The Jets began free agency with roughly $26 million in cap room have signed only role players up to this point with the biggest signings coming along the offensive line. John Simpson and Morgan Moses both came over from the Baltimore Ravens with the latter being via trade.

While both players figure to be upgrades from last season, neither is considered to be a prize at their respective positions. They are both solid players, but not splashy players. The Jets still need to build some depth along the offensive line as well as find their left tackle, a move I believe will come via the draft.

With the extra cap room they now have, I wonder if there is something else on the horizon for Joe Douglas and co. The Jets made a hard push for recently released, former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams when he was a free agent a few years ago. Maybe the Jets make another run at him. Or Tyler Boyd from the Cincinnati Bengals. Or (and I hope not) Odell Beckham Jr.

Maybe there is a trade on the horizon for a player we aren’t even thinking about.

No matter what is in store for the Jets the rest of the off season, they now have their Pro Bowl linebacker locked up for two more seasons and some extra cap room to play with to try and build a winning team.
