The Jets have seen plenty of highly drafted rookie quarterbacks have their debuts spoiled, and they finally got to return the favor.

The Jets held number one overall pick out of Alabama, Bryce Young to just 21 yards in 3 offensive series against the Jets defense.  The defense held stout the whole game and the Jets beat the Carolina Panthers 27-0.

The top pick of the draft was hammered by a Jets defender on two of his first three throws and sacked before he could get off a final attempt. So, he was hit on three of the seven times he dropped back to pass.

In all fairness to Bryce Young, the Jets defensive front four was a non-stop wave of pressure against the sub-par offensive line. The Jets front will be a force this season.

Even without starters Al Woods, Jonathan Franklin Myers or Carl Lawson, the front four were contently wreaking havoc in the backfield. Bryce Huff, Jermaine Johnson, Solomon Thomas and even rookie Will McDonald looked like they could be starters on almost any other team.

If the Jets offense can get a lead, it will be tough all season for teams to mount a comeback when the Jets can simply rotate player after player that excels at hitting the QB.

On the offensive side of the ball the Jets looked better than they have.

On paper, Zach Wilson looked better than he actually was. It’s hard to crush a guy for going 14 of 20 for 123 yards and a touchdown, but it really wasn’t impressive. Not one of his passes traveled beyond 10 yards in the air.

He was a parody version of check-down-Charlie. It seemed like every pass that wasn’t a three-yard dump over the middle to a tight end or back was an errant throw. At times you could wonder why receivers were even on the field.

One of the most heated position battles in camp is the spot for the sixth wide receiver essentially between Jason Brownlee and Malik Taylor. Both guys only managed 10 yards on a total of three receptions in five total targets.

He even managed to give us a 2022 Zach Wilson special, leaving Zonovan Knight to be crushed on a bad throw on a 1-yard swing pass. For as good as Zach looked against the Browns, what I saw against the Panthers showed there is a long road ahead of him before he is a legitimate starter in the NFL.

The offensive line looked much better than they had recently. Conor McGovern played very well at center, and it would be hard not to see him as the starter once the regular season begins.

Joe Tippmann looked good as well, but it might be difficult to unseat McGovern at this point. Billy Turner and Max Mitchell played well and Wilson was given time to throw while they were in at tackle but it is clear the Jets miss Duane Brown.

As for the other tackle, Mekhi Becton, every day that he remains on this roster his trade value dips. He looked awful when he was actually in the game, which in itself was a rare occurrence.

There isn’t too much to nit pick after 27-0 win, but the Jets might need to start making some roster cuts soon to get more reps for players who have a shot at making the team.
