Mac Jones trade is bad news for the Jets who want to make a quarterback deal of their own

A starting quarterback from the AFC East who was drafted in 2021 is headed out of town. It’s just not the one originally thought.
The New England Patriots agreed to send the former 15th overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, Mac Jones, to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a reported sixth-round draft choice in next month’s NFL draft.
Jones did not live up to expectations in New England after replacing the guy (Cam Newton) who replaced the guy (Tom Brady) and will now head back to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida to back up the quarterback that was selected first overall in the very same draft where Jones was taken.
The Patriots trading Mac Jones was not a surprising move, but the timing and the compensation should be troubling for Jets fans. With the Patriots only getting a sixth-round pick for a young quarterback who can’t seem to catch on to the NFL game, what value does Zach Wilson have now?
Up until now, the only comps to trading Zach Wilson were the Sam Darnold trade and the Trey Lance trade. The Darnold deal netted New York a second and fourth round selection. The Trey Lance deal gave the San Francisco 49ers a fourth-round pick from the Dallas Cowboys.
Based on those comps, the Jets should have netted at least a fourth-round pick for Zach Wilson, more likely a third. I mean, his numbers were on par with Darnold and Trey Lance has barely sniffed an NFL field. So why wouldn’t Wilson fetch a similar deal?
The Patriots essentially re-set the market for a young quarterback who hasn’t worked out yet despite being a high draft choice, and it will hurt the Jets in their negotiations for Zach Wilson.
The Hype isn’t Always Real
Mac Jones being traded for a sixth-round pick and the pending deals that will send Zach Wilson and Justin Fields out of their respected towns pretty much puts a bow on what might be the most over rated, over hyped quarterback draft class in history.
At the time, people were comparing the 2021 QB class to the 2004 class which included Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Phillip Rivers. Now we are looking at a group that only has Trevor Lawrence to point to as a success and that is a stretch.
A lot of these quarterbacks have talent, but without the proper situation around them, it can easily spiral out of control.
I say this because there are Jets fans out there who want New York to draft a quarterback in the first round of this year’s draft because it is “a good class”. None of that matters if you don’t get the right guys in the right set of circumstances. Don’t force it because you are scared of what may not be available later.
NFL officially releases the New York Jets’ full slate of picks in the 2024 NFL Draft
The 2024 NFL Draft is under two months away and the New York Jets officially know where they are picking in all seven rounds (or at least the five rounds they actually have picks). The NFL released its compensatory selections on Thursday, which paved the way for Friday's official release. The Jets have eight total […]
