The New York Jets were never seriously going to roll into the season with their wide receiver room as shallow as it currently stood heading into NFL free agency. Garrett Wilson was their only wide receiver with a pulse. There were rumors already this week that the Jets might look into adding Odell Beckham Jr., but it looks like they added an even better, younger wide receiver.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN the Jets are signing former Chargers star wide receiver Mike Williams to a one-year deal worth up to $15 million dollars. A hugely important signing if the Jets have any hopes of competing in 2024.

Mike Williams has struggled to stay healthy over the past two seasons, missing 18 games in total for the Chargers in 2022 and 2023. However, when healthy WIlliams was one of the best receivers in the league. Back in 2021 Williams tallied nearly 1200 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. And since that season he has averaged more than 71 receiving yards per game, good for a 17-game pace over 1200 yards per year. In fact, among receivers with at least 10 games in that span, Williams is 13th in receiving yards per game!

Williams should immediately plug into the Jets offense as their big-bodied X receiver who can stretch the field as he's averaged nearly 16 yards per reception throughout his NFL career. Pairing him with the versatility and dominance of Garrett Wilson is certainly a step in the right direction as the Jets begin to build towards the 2024 season.

The only other receivers projected to have significant rolls are still pretty poor: Allen Lazard, Xavier Gipson, Jason Brownlee. Expect the Jets to make another free agent signing and perhaps add another receiver in the draft (perhaps in round three).
