After a disappointing tenure, it appears that Zach Wilson will not be a member of the New York Jets in 2024. The Jets reportedly have no plans to pick up Wilson’s fifth-year option as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
Most indications during the season were that the Jets would try to trade Wilson and now, reports are that there are several teams interested in trying to do what the Jets could not and turn the former No. 2 overall pick into a viable NFL starter.
According to a report from uStadium, there are several teams interested in trading for Wilson once the new league year starts on March 13.
According to the report, the expected return for the quarterback bust might be "a Day 3 pick or a swap of mid-round draft picks."
Wilson's time with the Jets essentially ended after his midseason benching for Tim Boyle. Although he eventually returned to the starting lineup upon Boyle's release, it was obvious Wilson's time had come to a close.
The Jets reportedly met with Wilson after his initial benching and agreed to part ways in the offseason. Jets general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh were notably hesitant when discussing Wilson's future with the organization.
Something is Better Than Nothing
While Wilson certainly holds some blame for his lack of progression with the Jets, it was the organization the ultimately failed him. From forcing him into the starting lineup before he was ready, to subpar coaches, to a lack of protection, Wilson on the New York Jets was never going to be a match made in Football Heaven.
That being said, Wilson does have some raw abilities, that in the right situation, could help him blossom into a viable NFL starter. The holes in Wilson’s game are not physical, but mental. Put him with the right coach and let him learn and he can be a valuable asset.
The good news for the Jets and GM Joe Douglas is with multiple teams involved, and the precedent set in other high upside quarterback trades, I believe the Jets will wind up with at worst, a high fourth-round pick.
Two trades involving quarterbacks in recent years are a decent framework for a Zach Wilson trade. Typically, high draft picks hold a greater value, which is why quarterback Sam Darnold was able to fetch second- and fourth-round picks when the Jets sent him to the Carolina Panthers.
This past offseason, the San Francisco 49ers were able to nab a 2024 fourth-round pick when they traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. I don’t think it would be unreasonable with those comps to say Wilson should net a late third-round pick.
Jets Offseason Road Map: Three players that have to go
After another heartbreaking year and extending their North American sports leading playoff drought to 13 seasons, it’s time for the Jets to focus on the offseason. The Jets won’t be looking at any major changes to the coaching staff, so they will be focused solely on the draft and NFL free agency to finally end […]
