Pros:
- Receiving ability
Laube was not only New Hampshire's best receiving RB in 2023 but also the best receiver on the entire team. He led the team with 699 receiving yards and tied for the most receiving touchdowns with seven. - Burst at the 2nd level
Once Laube gets through the line, he often goes into another gear on tape. He becomes a mismatch for LBs, especially on the edge. - Ability after the catch
Laube looks natural with the ball in his hands, and he makes defenders look silly when put in one-on-one situations in open space.
Cons:
- Creating Separation
Strangely, a player like Laube, who is so shifty with the ball in his hands, struggled to get open on his own without it. Due to this, they worked hard to scheme him open and find ways to use their best playmaker. Unlike at New Hampshire, Laube simply isn't going to be the best player on any NFL team he ends up on, so he will have to work on his overall route running if he wants to carve out a role early. - Strength of Schedule
While Laube was certainly productive in college and became the best player on his New Hampshire team, many will question whether he can replicate this at the pro level. Every draft prospect is asked this question, but with New Hampshire being an FCS school, the average opponents Laube faced will be considered worse than the top RBs in this class. - Relies on Speed too Often
Instead of reading the defense and attacking the holes created by his offensive line, Laube often chooses to kick it outside and attempt to use his speed to beat defenders. This will be an area that an NFL coaching staff is going to have to coach out of him.
Player Evaluation:
Laube was a massive part of New Hampshire's offense last year. He led the team in rushing yards, receiving yards, carries, receptions, and rushing touchdowns. He also didn't let being their best player stop him from also being impactful on special teams, where he had both a punt and kickoff return touchdown. It'll be interesting to see how many of his roles will translate to the pro level, but whatever team lands him will have plenty to choose from.
Player/Role Comp:
Floor Comp: Rotational Pass Catching RB
Laube is one of the most proven pass catchers in this draft class at the RB position. I think that ability should earn him some early snaps in his career. What also plays in his favor is his willingness to play on special teams, which is a need for most rookies trying to earn a roster spot.
Ceiling Comp: David Johnson
Laube is one of the best, if not the best, dual-threat RBs in this year's class in terms of production. The level of competition faced makes it a big mystery if he can carry that success over to the NFL level. But a player that Laube's play style reminds me of if he can put all his strengths together in the NFL. Johnson's peak in the NFL may not have been very long, but he was a special receiving back. And I think of all of Laube's skills, his ability as a receiver will likely be the trait most sought after by NFL teams.
