The 2025 NFL Draft is roughly two months away, and a player firmly in the conversation to go as the first overall pick just revealed a new injury that throws everything into question.
Abdul Carter, the uber talented pass rusher out of Penn State has been discussed by many as being worthy of the first overall pick, or at the least the first non-quarterback to get selected. Medical evaluations at the NFL Scouting Combine revealed that Carter has a stress reaction in his foot which may require surgery. Suddenly his draft situation is much more in question.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the situation is very much undecided at this point. Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, reportedly laid out two potential scenarios. The first would be for Carter to have a preemptive surgery and insert a screw into his foot, which would be about an eight week recovery (meaning he would be healed up right around the time of the 2025 NFL Draft). The second would be for him to bypass the surgery in hopes of being healthy enough for his Pro Day, showing NFL front offices that he's healthy and ready to go.
If medicals weren't a question, and in a year where the quarterback class isn't widely discussed as being an elite group, the case for Carter to go first overall would be a strong one. He's a menace of a pass rusher, registering 12 sacks and two forced fumbles in his breakout junior season. At 6'3" 259 lbs, Carter is highly explosive and plays with a tenacious motor.
Carter has a big decision ahead of him in deciding how to handle this injury, but the top of the draft just got even more complicated that it already was, with quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward vying for the top spot, along with two-way Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. Draft season is really starting to heat up.
