The NFL Draft always delivers some shocking twists and turns, especially when it comes to the quarterback position. From six quarterbacks taken in the first 12 picks in 2024 to zero taken in the first 19 picks in 2022, something always shocks the NFL world every year. 2025 looks like it won't be an exception in that regard either.

The 2025 NFL Draft is less than a week away, but the consensus continues to shift on several of the top quarterbacks in this class. What does it all mean? How will things actually play out? Let's dive in.

2025 NFL QB projections extremely inconsistent

For those who pay attention to large sample mock draft data and draft projections every year this won't come as much surprise, but the 2025 NFL Draft quarterback class is flat out strange. In fact, the drastic shifts in consensus have been even more atypical than most any draft season in NFL history.

In most years, NFL Draft projections and expected draft ranges begin to solidify by the time February rolls around (you can see this history at both nflmockdraftdatabase.com and grindingthemocks.com) but not so this cycle. As you can see in the post below, the 2025 consensus has been all over the place.

Shedeur Sanders (QB, Colorado) was viewed as a consensus early first round pick even heading into last fall, slowly rising in-season. However, now his projected draft position is tanking with only a week to go.

Cam Ward (QB, Miami) didn't surge into early first round round conversations until the middle of October, although he has been the only steady consensus QB in the class for most of this spring.

Jalen Milroe's (QB, Alabama) stock torpedoed to end the 2024 season given his inconsistent play, but now it's surging back towards the first round inexplicably.

Despite a near perfect meaningful metrics season Jaxson Dart (QB, Ole Miss) didn't emerge as a consensus first round prospect until nearly April, completely flip-flopping places with Jalen Milroe in the consensus pecking order.

The typical class sees the vast majority of top options slowly rise dating back to the summer prior to the season. Not complete full-round shifts in expected draft range late in the process. Constant roller coasters outside of Cam Ward means we could potentially see some strange outcomes on NFL Draft night.

As we've detailed thoroughly here at A to Z Sports this spring there has been significant disagreement on Jaxson Dart. Multiple NFL teams have him as their QB2. Others don't believe his scheme translates to the NFL at all.

Todd McShay, Mike Renner (CBS Sports), Nate Tice (Yahoo & NFL Network), and more have expressed some doubts on the upside of this quarterback class for months now. All three making note of Shedeur Sanders' imperfections as well, yet the masses largely ignored his obvious shortcomings until recently.

Then there's the ultimate wildcard in Louisville's Tyler Shough. The 26-year-old rookie has been gaining steam to potentially go inside the first round. Tom Pelisserro (NFL Network), Mel Kiper & Field Yates (ESPN), and more top experts have mocked Shough inside the first round or just outside in the early second round.

Opinions are completely split on every single quarterback not named Cam Ward as he's the absolute chalk pick to go to the Tennessee Titans at first overall. Beyond that, there could be some real quarterback chaos that ensues.

Based on league sources who have spoken to A to Z Sports, don't be surprised if Jaxson Dart is the second quarterback off the board, but even that pick might be later than expected. It also wouldn't surprising to see anywhere from just two to perhaps as many as five quarterbacks sneak into the first round given how strange this class is shaking out.

Don't expect names outside of Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe, or Tyler Shough to force their way into the first round, but even Will Howard of Ohio State, Quinn Ewers of Texas, and Kyle McCord of Syracuse could go earlier than expected as several teams need to at least add one more young passer to their quarterback rooms here soon.
