Pros of D’Angelo Ponds

  • Elite competitive toughness and stamina. You can tell that he plays with the undesized chip on his shoulder, while playing above his measurables at every turn.
  • Excellent football intelligence. High level of route recognition and ability to key and diagnose run fits.
  • A true plus one in the run game. Does not care that he weighs 170 pounds, sticks his nose in run plays like a stacked backer.

Cons of D’Angelo Ponds

  • Better in zone than man coverage. Wish he had better change of direction skills to guard shifty slots as a nickel.
  • Frame is a major limitation. Lacks the sand in his pants to be physical at the catch point, but also the length to make plays on contested catches.
  • Transitions. A tad stiff at the top of his break, and when asked to turn and run.

Background

Ponds was a three-star recruit out of South Florida powerhouse Chaminade Madonna before joining Curt Cignetti at James Madison in 2023. Starting his collegiate career at just 150 pounds, Ponds’ dedication and tenacity quickly made him a starter who would follow Cignetti to Indiana. Ponds took the national stage along with the Hoosiers in 2024 before saving his best for last in 2025. Ponds finished his career with a career high in tackles, was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe award, and was named defensive MVP of both the Peach and Rose Bowl.

Player Evaluation

There is going to be a lot of teams that turn the page on Ponds due to his size, and rightfully so. His lack of height, weight, and length places constraints on his role and usage in the NFL. However, those measurements don’t tell the whole picture. Rarely do you see defensive backs that have an “it factor” but that’s the case with Ponds. His high football intelligence, competitive stamina, and a fearless nature against bigger pass catchers and ball carriers. I see him as a zone coverage defender who can be a plus one against the run, but also utilized in simulated pressures and zone blitzes, similar to what the Steelers did with Mike Hilton.
