Florida Gators standout already being compared to an NFL superstar as an early favorite to be elite 2026 NFL Draft prospect

It is early, but it looks like we might be have another tremendous defensive tackle group in the 2026 NFL Draft class once again. For most people, the conversation starts with Clemson star Peter Woods, a player who made an instant impact for the Tigers as a true freshman two years ago. It appears, however, that there is going to be quite the battle for that top spot next cycle.
When you talk pure upside, there might not be any defensive lineman with a higher one than Florida Gators standout Caleb Banks. A contributor for multiple seasons, Banks actually contemplated entering the 2025 NFL Draft class with a chance he could have heard his name called in the first round. Instead, Banks is coming back to try and solidify a selection at the very top of the class in 2026.
The ceiling is the roof
At 6-6 and 325 pounds, the former Louisville transfer boasts the ideal frame to play either a three or four-man front on the NFL level. Watching how the Gators chose to use Banks at times was quite an experience. He played everywhere from a true nose to both 4 and 4i techniques at times. There were even reps where they used him from wider alignments, including a couple or 9-tech reps against Georgia where he was playing outside shoulder of tight ends.
While that won’t be an alignment that Banks is used from a ton on the next level, it is a testament to the type of athlete Banks is. For a player as big as him, you would expect a linear mover who does his best work in very tight spaces. Then you pop on the film, and you see a massive human making plays in pursuit, and one that excels looping and exchanging gaps frequently.
You never want to get too hyperbolic on prospects, especially this early in the process, but Banks is a rare athlete for the position. Some will look solely at his box score production (21 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles) and assume this is a lower ceiling football player with limited playmaking upside. They would be very, very wrong in that assumption.
We are dealing with an interior defensive lineman who is just beginning to tap into how good he can be. From a technical perspective, Banks still has a lot of room to grow. His hand play and plan as a pass rusher is still a major work in progress. If they take a step forward, there is a chance he takes a massive rise during his final season in 2025.
if Banks does take that step, the top ten selections next April is not out of the question. He has the physical profile, and the background, to warrant going very early. NFL teams are sure to be enamored with the frame, versatility, and penetration impact that Banks can bring to the table.
An aggressive comparison
Player comparisons can be a fun exercise. In order to use them best, think of comps as a way to showcase parallels to other talented players and overall play style. When I watch Banks, there is one player that quickly comes to mind, Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Chris Jones.
Am I predicting Banks to be an all-time great and be a perennial Pro Bowler? Absolutely not. The comparison comes from the fact that we are dealing with rare athletes for their size that possess the combination of size and movement skills to become outstanding football players. That developmental arc is absolutely there with Banks.
If you remember Jones coming out of Mississippi State in the 2016 NFL Draft, we said a lot of the same things about him. He was an outstanding talent, but the production hadn’t quite come yet, collecting just eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks during his final season. That’s the biggest reason that Jones fell to the second round.
That example is a big reason to get on the traits that Banks possesses. The blueprint has already been created, and the Gator star has all the talent to fulfill it.
