Pros of Francis Mauigoa
- Dense, powerful build allows him to tap into secondary power and displacement ability in the run game
- Illustrates desirable functional balance; not often you see him ending reps on the ground when attached to blocks
- Wide base and strong core make him difficult to rush down the middle and offer him a stiff anchor in pass protection
- Supreme movement on deuce and trey blocks to create knock back and reset the line of scrimmage
- Shows desired upper body strength to torque defenders out of gaps and seal interior runs
Cons of Francis Mauigoa
- Both his length and his foot speed create some limits to his gravitational pull and test his edges; forcing him to hinge and open himself early
- Guilty at times to having defenders slip across his face due to only average mirror quickness
- May not fit the measurement profile of a tackle for all teams universally
- Outside zone teams may need to develop his technique in exploding off the football and attacking landmarks into space
Background
Miami Hurricanes offensive tackle Francis “Sisi” Mauigoa is a junior from the University of Miami. He was born in ‘Ili’ili, American Samoa and split his high school eligibility between Aquinas High School (CA), and IMG Academy after the COVID-19 pandemic. Mauigoa will be 20 years old on draft weekend for the 2026 NFL Draft and turn 21 in June of 2026. Ranked as a top offensive tackle recruit in the country (5-stars, 247Sports), he garnered interest from most of the traditional powers before committing to Miami.
Mauigoa finished his 2025 junior season with 42 consecutive starts for the program and over 2,800 carer offensive snaps. He did play 10 snaps at right guard in 2025 but otherwise has taken his reps fully at right tackle across his three seasons with the Hurricanes. Mauigoa was named Second-Team All-ACC in 2024, First-Team All-ACC in 2025 and was also given consensus All-American honors in 2025 for his play.
A member of The Athletic’s annual Freak’s List, Mauigoa was recognized for elite short-area burst (1.72s 10-yard split) and explosive power output measurements.
Player Evaluation
Mauigoa feels destined for the debate on whether or not he’s an inside or an outside blocker. Given the premium of offensive line play and the growing need for interior blockers at cost-friendly prices across the league, Mauigoa probably deserves the chance to start outside and fail inward if needed. Or, alternatively, he could be given a starting role inside to start and shuffle him long-term down the road if a team has rolling needs on the front. Displacement and anchor skills like these translate, although the scheme application could create a number of early career outcomes.
He’s currently best in close quarters and in combination blocks in the run game. Mauigoa shows little issue turning out ends and sealing the B-gap, too. But he’s more of a methodical power player who taps into secondary surge and lower body power throughout the duration of the block — teams that want to stress and stretch the point of attack to the perimeter may be more keen on projecting him to the interior where he won’t be so stressed by his developing technique and modest length. He does have the initial burst and explosiveness to live on the edge here with patience to let it click.
In pass protection, teams that operate in more quick game or offer moving platforms for the quarterbacks feel like accommodations to best optimize his abilities at tackle. If charged with playing on the outside, obvious passing situations could ideally be complimented with sending the back to his side or reduced splits to chip and distract rushers to stave off hard rushes upfield that would test him with speed while he hones and polishes his angles at the NFL level. He shows heavy hands and a stiff punch — so long as his feet are vigilant at first contact, he should prove steady as an interior pass protector thanks to that stun punch, his wide frame, and heavy anchor.
