Pros:

  • Pocket management
No one will be scared of Carson Beck's ability to run the ball, but he's a functional athlete in the pocket and can scramble for a few yards when needed. He's quick to shuffle his feet, keep his shoulders squared, and fire a pass downfield after buying himself some time and a cleaner launch pad. He's a natural and plays to his strengths more often than not, allowing him to be efficient and keep the offense moving.

  • Ball manipulation
Beck has a good arm but he shines when he layers passes over and between defenders. He's confident in his reads and arm talent, and his precision is good enough to back up his mindset. He attempts throws that have to be hit in the NFL and is giving his receiver the chance to finish the play more often than not.

  • Hunts defensive mistakes
The passing splits when Georgia runs play action versus when they don't show a clear advantage for Beck. His mistakes are drastically reduced on play actions, in part because he's kept clean, but also because it reveals coverages while he's transitioning from the mesh point to his throwing motion. His efficiency and big-throw rate are much better with this adjustment.

Cons:

  • Average traits
As with any pocket passer, Beck has to be nearly perfect with his mental processing and poise under pressure because he cannot consistently escape the pocket or make accurate throws with poor mechanics. His arm strength is average by NFL standards, and he does not have an overly flexible body while on the move. He's often exposed when rushed because he can't physically overcome his deficiencies.

  • Horrible play under pressure
The 2023 season was slightly better, but not enough to believe that 2024 has been some sort of aberration when it comes to situational play under pressure. There's no question that Beck is bad and a liability under pressure. He panics, and his turnover-worthy throws far outpace his big-time throws by almost three times the rate. Multiple things go into this, including not having the physical strength to take advantage of tight passing windows, not mentally being prepared to react quickly to hot routes, and simply rushing his own process beyond his means. If Beck isn't kept clean in the NFL, he won't survive for long.

  • Gets greedy
It's one thing to be physically limited, but it's another to accommodate for it. Beck seems to forget his role in the Georgia offense, in part because he's been overtasked in 2024 without an elite set of playmakers and a banged-up offensive line. However, his turnover-worthy throw total is obscenely high for his play style and ability, and he's contributing far less on short and intermediate throws than he should be. Beck will force too many throws as he hunts chunk plays instead of making logical progressions that avoid the strength of the defense.
  • Elbow injury
There's a decent chance Beck will miss part of or most of the 2025 offseason entering his rookie year due to the major elbow injury he suffered.

Player Evaluation:

The NFL has largely moved away from pocket passers, and it's even harder for those without elite arms to make it work at the next level. Beck played much better in 2023 than in 2024, but the signs were there that he was being overhyped as a first-round talent even then. It'll be difficult for Beck to be a standout NFL starter unless he can overhaul his reaction to pressure and improve his mental processing. He has to identify coverages almost flawlessly and get a stronger core to drive the ball more effectively.

Player Comparison:

Pro Comp: Mac Jones
Beck can make it work as a pocket-passer at the next level if he's terrific in situational play. He hasn't been in 2024, but the right situation can help him succeed enough to be a quality starter in the regular season. Even though Jones was more naturally accurate, I used a Mac Jones comparison. However, Beck is a better athlete and could have more answers because he's shown more nuance to his game than Jones had to. I think they're in similar boats, though, as guys vastly unlikely to be long-term starters at the next level.
