J.J. McCarthy has seen his stock consistently rise throughout the process ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft with an impressive in-season and offseason showing.
But despite this, he remains one of the most polarizing prospects available for the taking.
According to a report from ESPN's John Keim, one anonymous NFL offensive coach is among those who seems to believe McCarthy is overrated and will be selected too highly simply because of the fact he plays quarterback.
The coach said McCarthy is set to be "way over-drafted" because he is a quarterback and that he needs to shorten his stride and learn to throw with more touch, per the same report from Keim.
Another anonymous coach had posed some questions surrounding whether McCarthy should be considered in the same upper echelon of quarterbacks in the class that includes USC's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels and UNC's Drake Maye.
There seems to be a lot of buzz surrounding McCarthy going in the top 5 picks in the draft based on multiple mocks that have been released, with some even speculating the Michigan product will be taken off the board within the first three selections.
While McCarthy wowed at Michigan in the eyes of many, finishing out the 2023 season with an impressive 72.3% completion rate, 2,991 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions, there's still a negative narrative surrounding him that his ceiling is simply that of a "game manager."
There's no question McCarthy has a high floor as he executed the Michigan offensive scheme to a point of near perfection, but it's very reasonable to argue that the level of athleticism, mobility and arm strength he brings to the table could be more called upon in a different scheme, implying he has a much higher ceiling than he's being given credit for.
How McCarthy progresses and what type of heights he's able to achieve will be something to watch in the coming years as he begins his NFL career this fall.
