During a recent Yahoo Sports 2025 NFL mock draft, both Charles McDonald and Nate Tice collaborated to put together a full first round projection. It was a controversial top ten selection, which took X ablaze on Wednesday. One of the more interesting selections, in a potentially good way, was Miami quarterback Cameron Ward going to the Los Angeles Rams with the No. 8 overall selection.
Ward was the second quarterback selected during the first round, only behind Colorado signal caller Shedeur Sanders, who was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 5 selection. The Rams land Ward to be their heir apparent to Matthew Stafford, which is an interesting opportunity.
Here is what they had to say about Ward and his fit in Los Angeles.
“A reset is coming for the Rams, so why not take a quarterback now while they have a chance to sit and learn behind Matthew Stafford for a couple more years? Ward has been one of the darlings of college football this season, showing off the arm talent and playmaking ability that has the chance to get Miami to the playoffs.”
This would be a return for Ward to the West Coast, who spent the two previous years at Washington State before transferring to Miami this season. For people who don’t follow college football, Ward is a very interesting prospect. His journey has been fascinating.
Ward began his career at FCS Incarnate Word, following a career as a Wing-T quarterback at Columbia High School. He was a zero-star recruit, and didn’t have many options coming out. The talent was always there but he was definitely a project coming out.
His growth that he’s had over the last few years has been incredible to watch. After tearing up FCS football for two seasons, Ward had the chance to move up to the FBS level. During his three seasons on the Power Five level, he threw for 8,750 yards and 66 touchdowns. Ward also added another 15 scores on the ground.
If Sean McVay can develop Ward behind Stafford, you have a chance to sustain your offensive success into the future. He’s a talented kid who just needs a little time to continue to develop. That fit is fascinating.
