The first day of the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine testing concluded yesterday.
With linebackers, edge rushers, and defensive tackles taking the field.
To recap the day below is one winner and one loser from each position group.
Scouting Combine Winners & Losers:
LB:
Winner: Payton Wilson, NC State
The battle to become the first LB drafted is considered a tight race. But Payton Wilson may have pulled into the sole possession of first place after his tremendous showing at the Scouting Combine. The 6'4" LB ran a blazing fast 4.43 40-yard dash to lead all LBs. And while he elected not to perform the remaining testing after this time, him measuring in at 6'4" paired with great 40 time has him leaving Indianapolis a huge winner.
Loser: Aaron Casey, Indiana
Indiana LB Aaron Casey isn't a lock to hear his name during the upcoming draft, but a big performance at the Scouting Combine could have changed that. Unfortunately, Casey's performance was among the worst of the LB group. He had the second-slowest 40 (4.75), the lowest vertical (30.00"), and tied for the least amount of reps on the bench press (16).
DT:
Winner: Braden Fiske, Florida State
Florida State's Braden Fiske wasn't just the winner of the defensive tackle group but my biggest winner of day one. He had the fastest 40-yard dash of any DT (4.78), the highest vertical (33.50''), the furthest broad jump (9'9''), and the fastest 20-yard shuttle (4.37). Fiske started the draft process hot with a stellar week at the 2024 Senior Bowl, and he continued that success in his home state of Indiana at the Scouting Combine.
Loser: T'Vondre Sweat, Texas
Like Fiske, Texas DT T'Vondre Sweat had a great week at the Senior Bowl, but unlike Fiske, he struggled at the Scouting Combine. During Wednesday's media availability, Sweat shared that people would be shocked by how well he tested, but that wasn't the case. Sweat ended up with the slowest 40-yard dash time of all DTs (5.27), the third-lowest vertical (26.00"), the shortest broad jump (8'2") and chose not to participate in the bench press. His lone win of the week was when he weighed in at a solid 366 after choosing not to weigh in at the Senior Bowl.
Edge:
Winner: Dallas Turner, Alabama
Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner may have worked out with LBs yesterday, but let's call a spade a spade and compare him with edge rushers. He didn't participate in all the on-field drills because he simply didn't have to after he knocked the ones he did do out of the park. He began strong by people being blown away by his 34.375 arm length. Then, he continued to put on a show when he took the field in Indianapolis, where he recorded a lightning-quick 4.46 40-yard dash, the fastest of all edge rushers, the highest vertical (40.50"), and tied for the second furthest broad jump (10'7")
Loser: Austin Booker, Kansas
Kansas edge rusher Austin Booker had a great week at the Senior Bowl, and many were excited to see him light up the Scouting Combine. But his results honestly fell flat. He ended up with the third slowest 40-yard dash of all edge rushers (4.79), a middle-of-the-pack vertical (32.50), and a broad jump (10'0"). If Booker had a big week at the Scouting Combine, I think he could have forced his way into day two of the 2024 NFL Draft, but with this lackluster performance, I think he's more than likely coming off the board on day three.
