Strengths

  • Play Strength: Cornelius routinely delivers powerful blows with his hands, jarring defenders mid-rush, and generates plenty of movement in the run game. He isn't the most powerful tackle in this class, but he's a stout, physical player.
  • Anchor: Good luck getting through Cornelius with power, as he routinely demonstrated a good anchor. Cornelies was rarely moved with power alone once he was set.
  • Use of Hands: Cornelius demonstrated strong, accurate hands on most reps in both pass protection and run blocking. He isn't perfect, but he's a reliably accurate striker.
  • Length: While we don't have official measurements yet, Cornelius plays with good length in his film and knows how to use it.

Weaknesses

  • Limited Athleticism: Cornelius's ceiling is capped because of below-average athleticism. He struggles to handle speed outside and plays with a stiff lower half. When he doesn't win with an aggressive pass set, he lacks the recovery ability to make up for it and will lose the rep quickly. NFL rushers will eat him alive around the arc and feast on setting up counters on him if this isn't fixed.
  • Pad Level: Cornelius's lack of athleticism causes him to play too high, as he lacks the bend in his lower half to move lower. This often leaves him out-leveraged often and he'll fall off or lose reps because of this.

Player Evaluation

Ajani Cornelius is a four-year starter at right tackle at both Rhode Island and Oregon, but I'm not totally convinced that's his best fit at the NFL. He can get by there with his length and technique but would be rather reliant on aggressive sets and winning that way throughout his career.

He might manage to stick around there but could be better suited to kick inside to guard in the NFL to help mitigate his lack of athleticism outside.

Player Comparison

Jermaine Eluemunor (New York Giants)

I fought over a comp for quite a while before I settled on Eluemunor. The way I view Cornelius is he can be a quality backup/spot starter by the end of his rookie contract, much like what Eluemunor has become (although he's starting a bit more than just spot duties). Both Cornelius and Eluemunor win primarily off of power and technique, and both struggle in real dropback situations due to their limited athleticism.
