It hasn't been the greatest season so far for the North Carolina Tar Heels. They escaped week one with a 19-17 win over Minnesota but have gone 2-4 since with an 0-3 start in ACC play. Not much has gone right for them, but their running game has been one of the few bright spots.
Junior Omarion Hampton has been a destructive force in the running game for the Tar Heels this season, continuing his excellent work from the 2023 season. For the Tar Heels to become bowl-eligible, they needed a big performance from Hampton against the emerging Virginia Cavaliers.
Hampton is a bigger back at 6', 220 lbs and will bowl you over when given the chance. It's been relatively tough sledding for him so far, but he's making his touches count.
Hampton has 17 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown while pairing it with three catches for 37 yards. They fed Hampton as he touched the ball on over 40 percent of their plays (20/48) in the first half and wore out the Cavaliers' defense.
Hampton didn't waste any time in the second half, cashing his second touchdown of the game from eight yards out to put the Tar Heels up 31-6.
In a deep running back class that has Boise State's Ashton Jeanty at the top of the list, don't forget about Hampton who also has the tools and skillset to go in the first round.
