Not all journeys are the same, and not all experiences are created equal. As sports fans, we gravitate to the “underdog story”, for the road less traveled. That has been the path for East Carolina star cornerback Shavon Revel, who has gone from little known recruit, to Junior College player and now, one of the top cornerbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft class.
Standing at over 6-2 and 193 pounds, with outstanding film, and tremendous physical tools; So how could Revel have fallen through the cracks? How does a player who is now viewed as a potential top 100 selection in the 2025 NFL Draft never talked about? Taking a look at each stop helps gain some clarity, but still leaves some wondering just how so many different schools missed.
Reagan High School
Revel is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and spent his high school days in the area. For the first three years, the talented defensive back attended Reynolds High School. He then spent his last season at Reagan, a very good program in the area.
In that one year with the Raiders, he helped the team finish with a 9-4 record. Revel was a substantial performer on both sides of the ball for the team. On defense, Revel recorded 38 total tackles, three tackles for loss and four interceptions. On offense, he hauled in 33 receptions for 439 yards and five touchdowns.
While those are pretty good numbers, Revel was long and gangly on film. He didn’t appear to have grown much into his frame, with the explosiveness still developing. That is evident by Revel’s track and field numbers at Reagan, which were very middling.
Some of Revel’s personal bests included 6.90 seconds in the 55-meter dash, 37.87 seconds in the 300-meter, as well as a personal best jump of 20’ 9 ½” in the long jump, and 5-8 in the high jump. All of those numbers wouldn’t signal a potential future first round selection. If anything, it might suggest that he was a bit of a late bloomer.
Louisburg College
No matter the reason, Revel would end up going JUCO and enrolling at Louisburg College in Louisburg, North Carolina. For anyone who has ever followed athletes going the junior college route, it isn’t for everyone. Those programs see a lot of players come, and a lot who end up quitting.
Unfortunately for Revel’s journey, his first season with Louisburg was in 2020. Right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, their season ended up being canceled. Revel was left to train at his home and prepare for the 2021 season. During that lone season on the field with the program, he helped to lead the team to a 4-2 overall record in a season that was shortened coming off of the pandemic.
That made the film extremely limited for Revel, although there was clearly talent to work with. Sitting with no scholarship offers to his name, Revel would decide to camp at East Carolina in hopes of earning a scholarship. The explosiveness that Revel once lacked, was on full display for the Pirates staff.
At that camp, Revel turned a lot of heads. He would run 4.40 seconds in the forty-yard dash, as well as record an 11-foot broad jump. For context, that forty time would have finished ninth of any cornerback at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. That broad jump would have ranked fourth amongst the group.
With the Pirates being Revel’s best, and only opportunity, it was a no-brainer. He was once again staying home in North Carolina.
The 2025 NFL Draft Is Loaded In The Secondary, Which Includes A Long List Of Potential Sleepers
The 2025 NFL Draft is littered with some impressive talent in the secondary. That includes several potential sleepers worth keeping an eye on as we move towards the end of Summer Scouting.
ECU Pirates
Revel did not make an instant impact for East Carolina. In year one in 2022, he recorded just eight total tackles for the team. His massive breakout came last season.
While starting all 12 games, Revel would record 55 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, 12 pass breakups, while also blocking two kicks. That performance was good enough to earn a long list of accolades which included Second team All-American Conference (coaches), First team All-American Conference (PFF), Third team All-American Conference (Pro Football Network), and Third team by Phil Steele.
Even with that type of season, had you ever heard of Revel until recently? He has been one of the best kept secrets in all of college football, although not to teams. It was reported that some programs were offering him around $300,000 to jump into the portal this offseason. He opted to come back to ECU instead, where he heads into 2024 as one of the nation’s premier cover men.
2025 NFL Draft
As mentioned before, Revel is hardly a secret for NFL scouts around the league. There are several top 100 grades on him already, which should continue to increase after the 2024 season and the pre-draft process.
It’s easy to see why Revel is so well-liked around the league. He boasts a tall frame, with incredible length. His size and physicality would be enough to get some evaluators excited.
Then you see Revel turn and run, which puts the overall athletic profile into context. For a taller cornerback, Revel is a rare mover at the position. In a lot of ways, his game is eerily similar to former Pro Bowler Antonio Cromartie.
The length is rare. The hip fluidity is extraordinary. There aren’t many cornerbacks who are built like Revel walking around.
If Revel isn’t on your radar, change it quickly. This has the makings of one of the first cornerbacks selected in the 2025 NFL Draft when it is all said and done. Don’t be shocked if he is in the first round conversation before too long. The tools to work with are outstanding, and the NFL is taking notice.
