After 11 months, quarterback Kyler Murray is finally back. It was a long road, but the 2019 first overall pick will start again for the Arizona Cardinals against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday after a long journey to come back from an ACL injury he suffered last December.
On Friday, the Cardinals social media team shared an emotional video of Kyler's road to recovery.
The injury happened eleven months ago. And while the Cardinals have been cautious about his comeback, Murray said he's felt good for two months.
"Right at nine months, I woke up and I felt like, it feels different. I just kind of knew. I felt different," Murray said. "I've felt good for quite some time now."
The Cardinals coaching staff knows it might be challenging at first for the quarterback. It's his first game with a new system, and with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as his playcaller. But Kyler feels confident.
"I understand the thought process of 'Take it slow, don't be too hard on yourself.' I missed all the reps, I missed all the camp reps, I missed all the preseason. I've missed all this time," Murray mentioned. "But that's not in my head."
After eight games with Josh Dobbs and one with rookie Clayton Tune, the Cardinals are excited to have their starter back.
"Honestly, I'm excited for the guy," head coach Jonathan Gannon said. "I've seen what he's had to go through the last eight months or so. And what he's put into it and how bad he wants to be out there. The competitor he is, he wants to be out there with the guys and help this team win."
It's a difficult season for the Cardinals. The team is already 1-8, so the playoffs are unrealistic at this point. But what Murray does until the end of the season may dictate the future of the franchise, and the future of the quarterback — be it with the Cardinals or wherever else.
Eleven months later, Kyler Murray is finally ready to go.
