The Arizona Cardinals are giving running back James Conner a two-year contract extension, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

It is well-deserved for the eight-year NFL veteran Conner, who has been one of the more underrated running backs in the league over the past several years. Schefter also noted that the Cardinals are 5-1 in games when Conner reaches at least 100 scrimmage yards, and 1-4 in games when he doesn't.

Conner has racked up 705 rushing yards on 166 carries this season – good for a stellar 4.2 yard per carry average – and five touchdowns. He has also produced 29 catches for 288 yards. Last year Conner eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the first time in his career, and he is on pace to do so again in 2024.

If he can average 80 total yards during each of Arizona's final six games, Conner will set a new career high in scrimmage yards for a single season. It's rare that you see a running back produce the best numbers of his career this late into his NFL tenure. He and quarterback Kyler Murray have made for a dynamic duo, combining for 1,085 rushing yards through the first 11 games.

If the Cardinals are going to reach the playoffs, Conner will have played a big role in getting them there. Arizona and the Seattle Seahawks both sit atop the NFC West with 6-5 records, but the Seahawks currently own the tiebreaker as they beat the Cardinals last week. The two will face off again in Week 14 at State Farm Stadium.
