In a move that was expected for weeks, the Arizona Cardinals opted not to activate Kyler Murray from the reserve/physically unable to perform list when he became eligible on Monday.

Murray has been sidelined since he tore his right ACL against the New England Patriots last year. Arizona ended up placing him on the reserve/PUP list in August.

From the Cardinals’ standpoint, it is far from a setback or even a "disappointment" that Murray has not yet received the green light to return to practice.

"I don’t think there’s any disappointment," Gannon said during a press conference ahead of Week 5. "We knew his timeline in where he’s at and that’s kind of a day-by-day deal as with all of our guys that are coming off an injury."

Gannon has kept a close watch on Murray as of late, and he sees a quarterback who is itching to make his way back to the practice field.

"He’s been very upbeat the whole time, but these past couple of weeks I’ve seen a little bit of a different bounce in his step," Gannon said. "He will keep going day-by-day and when he’s ready to get out there we’ll get him out there."

The Cardinals are not in a rush to get Murray back to in-game action. Gannon made clear last month that Arizona is still taking it "one day at a time" with the two-time Pro Bowler’s injury rehab process.

Murray’s five-week window in which he could be allowed to begin practicing kicked off after he missed the Cardinals’ Week 4 road matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. If Murray ends up returning to the practice field during this time period, the Cardinals would then have three weeks to decide whether to move him to their 53-man active roster or keep him on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Murray is reportedly “considered weeks away from playing.”

For now, the Cardinals will continue to count on Joshua Dobbs to lead the way on the offensive side of the ball. He has thrown four touchdown passes and zero interceptions over four starts so far this year.

Arizona will next be in action on Sunday when it hosts the Cincinnati Bengals at State Farm Stadium.
