Jonathan Gannon won’t acknowledge the Cardinals’ elephant in the room with Kyler Murray after win against Cowboys
Jonathan Gannon has a decision to make that could alter the season.
The Arizona Cardinals took advantage of the primetime stage and came away with an impressive win over the Dallas Cowboys in Jerry’s World.
It’s been a tough few weeks for the Cardinals, who have lost the last five games by a total of 13 points. The one thing that stands out, however, is how much better the team has played since Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback. The Cardinals lost two very competitive games against the Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts with Brissett, and now got the needed win against the Cowboys, which will start a conversation.
Should the Cardinals stick with Brissett at quarterback once Kyler Murray gets healthy? A lot of people know the right answer, but head coach Jonathan Gannon doesn’t want to acknowledge the harsh truth.
Jonathan Gannon avoids quarterback controversy after win
Brissett has the hot hand at quarterback right now, and he’s not cooling off one bit after a big win and the Cardinals need to think about riding it out to have a chance at the playoffs. Gannon was asked if Murray would still be the starter when he’s healthy, and he answered as you would expect.
“Yeah, nothing’s changed on that,” Gannon said. “It’s just how I feel.”
He was then asked if Brissett had done enough to be a starter, and he shut down the conversation.
“Yeah, I’ve got nothing to add on that, guys,” Gannon added.
Jacoby Brissett is the obvious answer for the Cardinals
Whether Gannon wants to admit it or not, Brissett is the answer at quarterback, and all the proof is there. Murray’s last game resulted in a loss to one of the worst teams in the league in the Tennessee Titans, and the offense looked stale. Brissett has ignited both struggling wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride.
Murray only averaged 170 passing yards per game, while Brissett is currently averaging 256 passing yards per game and hasn’t had any of their top running backs since he took over. McBride only had five touchdowns in three seasons with Murray, and already has four touchdowns in three games with Brissett.
Even if Gannon doesn’t want to point out the obvious answer, Monday Night Football commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman said the quiet part out loud.
Murray could be back from his foot sprain next week, but Gannon has a decision to make in what will be a week-by-week basis in Arizona.
