Cardinals' secondary gets absolutely no love in latest national rankings
The doubts in the Arizona Cardinals’ secondary are there, but it may not be for the right reasons.
The Arizona Cardinals have made significant investments in fortifying their defensive secondary.
Last year, they drafted two cornerbacks and secured another via waivers. This year, they aggressively acquired three cornerbacks and a safety through the draft. They also solidified their secondary by signing Sean Murphy-Bunting. Notably, the team already possesses a six-time Pro Bowl safety in Budda Baker and a high-quality safety in Jalen Thompson.
Despite all the promise, Pro Football Focus isn't sold on the Cardinals' secondary. The outlet ranked Arizona dead last in the league in its latest secondary rankings.
"General manager Monti Ossenfort recognized the lack of talent in the secondary and threw a ton of resources at the unit, as the Cardinals selected three cornerbacks and one safety in the 2024 draft," writes John Kosko. "Highlighted by second-round CB Max Melton from Rutgers, this group needs some rookies to step up into big roles and will hope safeties Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson have career years."
The ranking is harsh. And, honestly, it feels questionable. Garrett Williams will be a good player. There is too much talent for someone not to emerge during training camp.
When the 2024 season starts, the writing on the wall says the Cardinals won't be statistically the worst secondary in the NFL.
