After a hectic offseason, the Arizona Cardinals are set to open up their 2023 campaign with a road matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Who will start at quarterback for Arizona in Week 1?
It is still up in the air as to just who will be under center for the Cardinals in their regular season opener against Washington. Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has shied away from publicly revealing just who will start at quarterback on Sunday, although he has made clear that the team is well aware of his final call on this matter.
The Cardinals reportedly plan on handing the keys to the offense over to Joshua Dobbs in Week 1. Arizona acquired Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns in late August.
Dobbs did spend much time in practice over the past days building chemistry with the likes of Zach Ertz and Michael Wilson, so it would be far from a surprise to see him anchor Arizona's offense on Sunday.
Will Arizona’s pass rush show signs of life?
The Cardinals entered the offseason in dire need of reinforcements within their pass-rushing unit. They are coming off of a 2022 season in which they ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in sacks with 36.
In the end, the Cardinals decided against going all out to revamp their pass rush. Instead, the three players on the team who led the way in sacks last season left the organization in one way or another, including J.J. Watt, who called it a career after logging 12.5 sacks in the 2022 campaign.
If the Cardinals have any chance of containing the Sam Howell-led Commanders offense, then it will come down to whether the likes of Zaven Collins and Cameron Thomas will be able to regularly pressure the former North Carolina standout.
2 players to watch for the Cardinals’ matchup against the Commanders
James Conner
Regardless of who ends up getting the nod to start for the Cardinals at the quarterback position on Sunday, James Conner is expected to be called on quite a bit to lead the offense. After back-to-back seasons with 700-plus rushing yards with Arizona, Conner is projected to once again lead the NFC West side's ground game this year.
Paris Johnson Jr.
Cardinals offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. is slated to start out at the right tackle position against the Commanders in Week 1. The former Ohio State standout is set to have quite a test in his NFL debut, as he is expected to square off with Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat for much of the contest.
