The Atlanta Falcons have been proactive with their search for the team’s next head coach after firing Raheem Morris, wasting little time in sorting through candidates with a clear goal in mind. They’ve gone through numerous candidates on the way, and now, they officially have their man.

After two rounds of interviews, Matt Ryan makes his first move as Atlanta’s president of football by naming former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski as the Falcons’ next head coach.

Kevin Stefanski is a smart hire by the Falcons

A two-time NFL Coach of the Year, Stefanksi went 45-56 over his six years in Cleveland and was fired after the 2025 season. In his first season with the Browns, he turned the team around, finishing 11-5 and winning a playoff game. Things did not go well after Baker Mayfield left, as ownership saddled him with Deshaun Watson, and the roster got much worse under general manager Andrew Berry.

Despite the constant nonsense around him, Stefanski was constantly out-scheming opponents to get the absolute most out of his personnel, and got blood from a very, very thick stone with the quarterbacks and wide receiver play the Browns have been trotting out under him until this season, when it felt like everything finally caught up to him and the team.

With the Falcons, Stefanski has significantly better personnel to run his offense. The Falcons boast a strong offensive line, particularly for the outside zone scheme that Stefanski made his bread and butter. Plus, the trio of playmakers Atlanta has in Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts makes this a very attractive job. Questions remain at quarterback, but Stefanski has an established history with Kirk Cousins, who is a seamless fit in his offense.

Kevin Stefanski’s potential Atlanta Falcons coaching staff

As time goes on, we’ll learn more about the staff Stefanski will bring with him to the Falcons. He’s an established and well-respected coach with plenty of connections across the league.

SI’s Albert Breer has already reported that Stefanski would very likely be keeping defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich in town. Ulbrich was a key cog in Atlanta’s defensive turnaround this season and helped develop a standout rookie class of Falcons, including James Pearce Jr., Jalon Walker, Xavier Watts, and Billy Bowman Jr. If they can keep Ulbrich in Atlanta, that’s a significant win for the Falcons’ organization.

I wouldn’t be surprised if names like Bill Musgrave, the Browns’ current quarterbacks coach, follow Stefanski, as Musgrave coached Matt Ryan in Ryan’s first few seasons in the league. Some national reports have tied current Browns OC Tommy Rees to the same position in Atlanta. Bill and Brian Callahan have already been named as potential candidates for the coaching staff.
