The Atlanta Falcons bolstered their trenches on Monday with a bargain deal, signing former UFL offensive lineman Jaryd Jones-Smith to their 90-man roster, per KPRC2's Aaron Wilson.
Jones-Smith isn't too new to the NFL, having previously spent time on a handful of practice squads with some in-game action.
The 6-7, 320-pound tackle originally signed with the Houston Texans following the 2018 NFL Draft as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Pittsburgh.
After having a "cup of coffee" in Houston, Jones-Smith also had short stints with the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, and Washington Commanders.
Jones-Smith has only appeared in six NFL games, playing three in Baltimore and three in Vegas, though that's more than some players on the Falcons roster can say.
Most recently, Jones-Smith dominated the UFL while playing left tackle for the St. Louis Battlehawks where he earned a nod on the honorary All-UFL team for allowing only two sacks through 11 games in 2024.
Jones-Smith's UFL teammates, including former Alabama star and current Battlehawks quarterback A.J. McCarron, have nothing but great things to say about him as a person and player.
“He’s unbelievable. Listen, [he] is the vocal leader of our O-line and somebody I always lean on,” McCarron said of Jones-Smith. “It’s always good to see 75 protecting your blind side, he’s just played unbelievable. I can’t say enough good things about him.”
The Falcons are not necessarily in need of offensive life help behind Kaleb McGary, Jake Matthews, and Storm Northon, but it's hard to pass up a cheap signing and ultimately gives the younger guys more veteran competition to battle during training camp.
