The Atlanta Falcons had a tough finish to the 2024 season with a lot of that being due to the struggles of quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Ahead of their week 16 game against the New York Giants, the Falcons chose to replace Cousins with rookie first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. He started the final three games of the season after Cousins lost four of his last five games.
The dip in Cousins' performance was stark and seemed to be relatively unexplained other than his age and Achilles injury.
It was a down season for Cousins. He completed just 66.9% of his passes for 3,508 yards and 18 touchdowns. However, his 16 interceptions were the highest in a single season of his career. It didn't help that Cousins struggled to move in the pocket and generating power in his throws was a struggle.
However, Cousins gave us some more information on that could give us some more context. During an appearance on Good Morning Football, Cousins admitted that he hurt his right shoulder and elbow in their week 10 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, the first of four consecutive losses for the Falcons.
This doesn't change much for the Falcons and Cousins long-term, as the two parties are likely to part ways this summer. However, it does give other teams more confidence this season that he could return to the player that thrived with Kevin O'Connell.
